This position reports to the finance/accounting department at Daktronics. The finance/accounting team serves Daktronics stakeholders – employees, customers, vendors, shareholders, and community. Our work is focused on enabling Daktronics’ success by being trusted advisors, guiding or supporting company compliance and risk management efforts, being operationally excellent, and developing ourselves and the team. We have the responsibility to prepare accurate financial statements, as well as provide useful financial information to various departments within Daktronics. As part of this responsibility, the accounting department assists in internal control design, subsidiary financial information, and other key business activities.
We are looking for a Project Accountant to join our team with overall responsibility for the accounting and reporting of project related financial results in cooperation with the project management and accounting team. This position is responsible for being a key team member in contributing to a project’s success and customer satisfaction. The Project Accountant will work on a variety of project types including construction contracts, standard contracts, warranty projects, and service contracts.
What are my responsibilities:
- Review contracts, requests for proposals, and other contractual documents for structuring issues and concerns related to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) compliance, credit, taxes, and other areas consistent with corporate risk guidelines. This includes working with the project management, credit, tax, and legal areas.
- Evaluate all contract types for proper accounting in accordance with GAAP revenue recognition guidelines. This includes review of all aspects of the contract to ensure compliance with such things as our revenue recognition policy, segmenting or combining of contracts, and other applicable GAAP provisions.
- Properly set up contract(s) entry for appropriate accounting for various revenue recognition type, warranty terms, extended service agreements, for proper accounting and disclosures.
- Partner with the project manager or service team to ensure timely billing and pay applications submittals, change order approval, subcontractor payment, accurate estimating of costs, with an emphasis on internal costs such as equipment, services, and control systems and management of project estimates. Work in conjunction with the credit department to address collection issues, file claims, and hire collection agents, as necessary.
- Analyze project margins, order margins, and backlog and report to accounting and business unit management, product engineering, and corporate management monthly.
- Administrate timely filing of supporting documents required contract and subcontracts such as change orders, lien releases, owner waivers, insurance certificates, payment, and performance bonds. Track supporting documents, as necessary.
- Perform analytical studies to support revenue recognition models and pricing comparables.
- Responsible for month-end reconciliation of backlog and over/under billings accounts.
- Responsible for providing information and schedules to the auditors.
- Participate in the implementation of leading accounting policies, practices, and efficiencies in a lean environment.
- Participate in the selection and implementation of accounting and project management related software upgrades and process improvements/changes.
Where will I be working?
Daktronics offers the flexibility to work from a U.S. home or Daktronics location. This opportunity is open to U.S. based candidates. Exact working hours are flexible, but this position will be based on working during regular business hours in the Central Time Zone.
Qualifications
What do I need to be qualified?
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting is required. Preference is to have an advanced degree in accounting or a CMA or CPA license. You will also need demonstrated experience in the areas listed below:
- Understanding of financial accounting concepts and U.S. GAAP, especially revenue recognition models.
- Managerial accounting capabilities to produce information for decision making.
- Information systems understanding, especial ERP and reporting applications.
- Excellent business acumen and strategic thinking.
- Ability to identify, measure, analyze, and interpret accounting information to help managers make decisions.
- Strong self-motivation and ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a team.
- Continued willingness and desire to learn and be flexible with an evolving workload.
- Strong organizational skills including managing multiple and changing priorities with accuracy.
- Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating collaboration with others and effective relationship development.
- Effectively exercise discretion and independent judgment.
- Fluent in English, written and verbal.
- Commitment to following policies and procedures and maintaining confidentiality.
- Knowledge of, or aptitude to learn, business intelligence software solutions such as Reporting Services, Power BI, and Business Planning and Consolidation software. SQL knowledge beneficial, but not required.
- Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience in ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and/or Microsoft reporting and analytical software.
- Ability to travel by air and ground. Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Motor vehicle records will be checked.
